I have not found the air filter in my TRANE XE80. I have a vent under the closet where the unit is housed, but there is not filter there.

Ok, it's actually on the underside of the unit. Open the closet door so you are looking at the inside unit. At the bottom where it sits on the plywood, you will see a slot, that is where the air filter is. Also you can see it if after opening the vent you opened (return air grill) if you look up inside.

If you have a heat pump, which is what it sounds like, I would think that the compressor unit is not turned on or it has blown a fuse or breaker. The weird noise you hear is probably the compressor unit trying to start on 110 volts (or in the worst case it has froze up and needs to be replaced) either way I would have it looked at.

There should be a return vent somewhere. Its a vent that takes the inside air back to the unit. Usually in a wall or ceiling.

Look between the furnace housing and the return duct which is the large metal duct that runs down to the floor.

If you don't find one in the blower housing, return air grille, or somewhere in between, someone has failed to replace it in the past.
