first, they sat back and watched the action in the pits..and started shorting the futures..and when the orange juice crop report came out, it was a non-event as the OJ was not effected by the winter weather...therefore, the price was overvalued and started to drop fast because of the supply/demand.
since the OJ crop was fine, the prices were going down..the Duke Brothers were caught in a free fall because they loaded up on the OJ futures and lost their ***.
after the futures fell like rocks, Winthorpe and Billy Ray started buying back the futures..meaning they were 'covering' their short.
to cover means to buy back what you sold earlier.
so they made out like bandits.

I believe the brothers invest based on the fasle report and when the price of rises super high, the real report is reveled and Murphy and Akroyd buy the stock back and get the stock at a super low price owning a ton of stock. BUt the bros did not sell in time so they became broke. They spent all their money and the stock neded up being almost worthless.

they paly the stock market... i dont really understand how those work, stocks kinda confuse me...
but i have the movie and it seems like some insider trade type thing, like martha steward was caught up in...
i think billy and winthrope spread some kind of rumor of how the stock is gonna go, so the two old guys will do that but then it doesnt happen that way cuz it was a trick.

They buy and then sell the correct stocks, they others do the opposite with the bad stocks. So the stocks the brothers buy are expensive but worthless and no one will buy them back and they can't sell them to get their money back out.

It would actually save you time if you just watched the movie. It's on cable all the time. It's one of those kinds of movies that if you turn the channel, it's bound to be on. Bottom line- they get some inside information and turn it around in their favor (or something like that).
