Depends on what you plan on placing on the 2x10....if it is a second story wall and then i would not go over 2 feet.....but if it is an overhang with roof loading only you can go up to 4' or more....depends on what region of the country you are in....this is the southern building code

I'm no engineer, but I don't think there is just one answer. It would depend upon the maximum load to be carried upon the cantilevered section of joist; how many joists are to bear the load, the kind of wood being used, etc..

with ordinary weight requirements, about 6 feet.
