respecting ur restrictions: it is the product of the development of the instinct of species preservation. as sexual desire is a fundemantal need of this instinct so love is a more complex form. love implies the need of another. that other is the person who u will have children with. this need insures the presence of both parents and creates a secure environment for the child to evolve into the adult, protection through the early years of development untill the child reaches a stage when he/she doesn;t need that protection anymore. love has evolved from this and the fact that in most cases it does not satisfy the original instinct is unimportant because instinctual adaptations take a very long time to modify and human are very complex creatures who can satisfy their instincts by performing incomplete or modified adaptive behaviours without fulfilling the primal purpose of the instinct

In his book The Road Less Traveled, Scott Peck defines love as not a feeling but an action. To love someone even when you do not feel loving towards them. I really like the way he writes about the subject. The emotion, chemical reaction is falling in love...many say this is a physiological reaction to keep the species going. If the Budda Dated is one of the BEST dating books I've EVER read. She answers your question in detail. AWESOME BOOK!

It is some or all of the above. There are different phases that love goes Thur. The only consistent thing is a need to be with someone.

Without emotion, physical or chemical reaction, Love doesnt matter much.

However....... Love would be the affectionate acceptance of things as they are.

Seeing your worth validated by another. Take emotion, chemicals and physicality out of the equation, and what you're left with is egocentrism.

To be able to see the same divine essence that you have in another person. You respect them and set them free by not judging them or critisizing them for choosing the life they live. You accept them because just like you, they are a divine spark of God.

Love is patient, Love is Kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

Thats the best definition I can think of.
