When I was in school, you were allowed to take up to 18 credit hours, or 6 courses at 3 credit hours each. That's at Loyola University Chicago. In order to take more than that, you needed approval from the dean. I wouldn't suggest spreading yourself too thin!!! An average # of credit hours is 15, or 5 courses at 3 credit hours each.

The rules vary from school to school, but usually to be considered a "full-time student," you have to be taking at least 12 credit hours. 11 hours or less is considered "part-time." Most schools have a cap at 18 credit hours per semester (for your own sanity's sake), and to take more you need special permission. The average course load is between 14 and 16 hours.

As for the number of courses, that depends on how many credit hours the courses are worth. Most courses are worth either 3 or 4 credit hours, and you add up the number of hours to figure out your course load. Check your course catalog or ask your academic advisor to see what different classes are worth.

It depends on the school. I had a friend who took 19 credits in one semester. It usually goes by number of credits, not number of classes.

It depends on your school's rules, but most schools allow you to take 18 credits (5 courses) as your maximum. However, you can always overload with your advisor's permission.
