I have always wondered, if you watch T.V. or use the computer while there is lightning outside do you have a chance of being electricuted. Doesn't it already have power hooked up to it to start with? And if so, why isn't everything shorting out before you turn it on. If I turn it on will it blow up or electricute me? Does anyone really know?

Hi. I'm a ham radio operator and my antenna is 45 feet high. I unplug my radio when a thunderstorm gets close because lightening will always follow the easiest path to the ground. You will be safe as long as you are not in that path. If a wire entering your house gets hit and you are touching that wire you could get hurt, so it's not a bad idea to leave electrical things alone during a thunderstorm.

normally, if there is a power surge your tv or computer will shut down but if the surge is large enough there have been instances where televisions have blown up, not a huge explosion but enough to cause actual destructon of the tv. I have not heard of anyone being electricuted while on a computer or watching tv, but to be safe shut them down.

had a friend who was pumping gas - the lightning hit the ground nearby went thru underground gas tank up to handle of pump and bazowee! his arm was blown from the pump - he of course remembered the old adage "lightning never strikes twice" so he tried to finish pumping Bazowee! another strike knocked him 10 feet back - hes okay but respects benjamin franklin more than ever

Electricity will go to the easiest ground source. If the ground on your residence is not correctly installed , the charge can very easily go to your body which is a great ground source. There are too many factors to explain it in detail.

there is a remote chance..if the lightning strikes the power lines to your house directly it could travel down the line and get inside..if it struck the house as well but the damage would be substantial..
