Flour mills have exploded in the past. You need to have the correct space between the flour molecules, an ignition source and sufficient oxygen. This is very difficult to achieve. Any finely ground combustible can do this. It happens to saw mills, flour mind, sugar mills, lint and dust. The small mass of the particles and high surface area make them easily combustible and prone to become air born. These explosions are slow moving and relatively cool. They usually only result in broken windows and dislodged doors.

Yes, flour can definitely explode, as the many people killed in silo explosions can tell you.

Basically, it has to do with fine particulate flammable substances swirling rapidly in an enclosed space.

I would whole-heartedly recommend that absolutely NO ONE should attempt to repeat the experiment outlined on this page

Cuz exploding stuff is very dangerous and I take no responsibility for anyone blowing up their kitchen doing something I specifically told them NOT to do!!

I don't know if it would be dangerous but it sure would be funny and entertaining. Try a fire cracker. You might have a giant mess to clean up. Or micorwave.

yes it can. that's why mills were never run at night. it's all about small particle size, and i wouldn't recreate this. it will quickly get out of control and it's my policy not to get involved with demo work

Use common sense on safety! Don't do this in your house. Have fun.
