No, in California it is usually bird seed. I'm told the reason is the birds eat the rice, then it swells up in their bellies and makes them sick. Besides, bird seed is such a clever answer to the problem; it also can symbolize prosperity and, even better than rice, symbolizes fecundity. The wedding I went to years ago, the bride made silk rosebuds that were filled with bird seed. You sort of waved them at the couple as they came out of the chapel, and the bird seed flew all over. So did the birds.

Do not throw rice at a wedding. Many birds cannot digest rice and they eat it anyway. Then when the birds drink water the rice swells up and can kill them. Do throw birdseed instead.

It's supposed to be an ancient fertility ritual. But in the good old days, people throw grains or nuts.

I don't believe in food wastage, unnecessary money spent or mess. So I don't encourage, confetti/rice/wheat/birdseed throwing (unless you actually have birds on standby to eat, i dun mind that 3rd option).

My first wedding they threw rice, but it took forever to get that out of my hair and out of our truck. My second wedding we went with the bubbles, I liked it so much better. It gave the grown ups the chance to act like a child once again.

No, because most towns have an ordinance out prohibiting the throwing of rice since it swells in birds tummies and makes them go BOOM! So we throw birdseed instead.

At catholic churches in Ontario, we are not allowed to throw rice or confetti or anything else... and not because of the birds. It is because the church does not want to clean it up afterwards. Bubbles are ok.

It depends on your culture. I am Vietnamese. If I am getting married, I would have 2 different ceremonies. And at my cultural ceremony: yes, I would throw rice. Uncooked rice that is. Isn't that good luck?
