Most of the representations of Americans come from American TV shows (Friends, ER etc), so generally they're portrayed in England the way they are in America. However - there are some ideas we have, like those shown in the Budweiser ads sponsoring the World Cup. Hopefully, though, most people in England know the stereotypical American (arrogant, close-minded, self-centred) is no more real than the stereotypical English person (bizarrely posh, absent-minded, and, apparently, assholes)!

All of a sudden a lot of you Americans are coming on line to ask what the rest of us think of you, I can only put it down to, too much alcohol last night.
This is the 3rd Q I've replied to. I have a lot of American friends and I love them all dearly, I will not generalise about people that I have not met, so on the whole I have the greatest respect for your wonderful country and its people.
I hope you enjoyed the 4th celebrations and that all went smoothly and everyone was safe.
ps, I have noticed that the people over here that slag Americans off, have never met any.
Take care, Sue from Liverpool.

They aren't much portrayed, half our TV and most of our movies are American so there isn't any need. If you live in a large town or city you bump into Americans everyday now so no-one even notices much anymore.
Some common stereotypes are:
Loudmouth Jerk
Flash git
Effeminate ***** whipped husband
Loud ferocious wife
Spoiled loud kids
Heroic type
Cool guy
Saucy chic
Rich and interesting (for women only), so it's not all bad.

House is great, brilliant programme.
Hugh Laurie who plays house is actually a comedian here in the uk, quite popular, well known, so i find it quite strange seeing him portrayed as such a dark charachter.
I think americans tend to get portrayed as brash, loud, materialistic and full of one-upmanship. Thats not my personal opinion.
I personally thinks americans have a different sense of humour than us brits, but I think they are pretty much the same in most other things.

MMM, interesting question, not a lot of peope like to admit they like americans. Then again not many people here like Simon, but there are lots of people who like to hope that americans are like the characters of sitcom friends ( hence it being so popular here ).

Not sure if you're aware, but if you look at your pic in the negative sense, it looks like a wrinkled old lady with two sagging boobs, a belly and black undies!
