The most essential things are a changing table, Diapers, and something for the baby to sleep on and in. (sleepers and some kind of small bed and receiving blankets)

Also a car seat.

Beyond that it needs your love, and of course your breast milk.

Everything else is gravy.

There is nothing confusing about what your baby needs before they come into this world. Having a baby shower is wonderful but do not depend on others to buy anything or everything for you, this is your baby and your responsibility. A list of what your baby will need

Crib
Carseat, you cannot take your baby home from the hospital without a carseat
Diapers, yes the hospital give you some but not enough for you to take home just to use while in the hospital
Formula, yes the hospital does give you small 2oz bottles but those are for you to use while in the hospital
Get on WIC (a program for pregnant/breastfeeding women, infants and children) every state in the US has this program where you get FREE baby formula, milk, egg, cheese, cereal, and juice because we all know formula is expensive. WIC is based on your income, household size and your situation so please get on that as soon as possible
Sleepers
Babywash
Babylotion
Bottles 8oz and 4oz
Pacifiers
Onesies or t-shirts

If you need help ask a friend to go with you to the store.

Good luck and blessings~

First things first, you do not need to overly stress. At the hospital, you will be a small supply of diapers, and even formula if you are not breastfeeding. This will give you time to find which size will fit your new baby, as well as which type of furmula they prefer. At home, you need to focus on where the baby will be sleeping. Do you have a crib or bassinet for the baby to sleep in? If not, then a simple thing to do is ask those around you if they know anyone who has one that they are not using anymore. (Most people will store their childrens crib away, even after the child has grown.) I got my daughters crib from my dads aunt and uncle. Once your baby is born, you can determine what size of clothes they need, so diapers, formula and clothes really do not need to be considered until after the baby is born. The one major thing you will need, other than a place for baby to sleep though, is blankets, as many as possible. As well, you will need a carseat (baby carrier) to bring the baby home in. You CANNOT carry the baby in your arms, in either a car or bus, coming home from the hospital. Other than that, everything is basic. Baby soap and shampoo to wash your baby, perhaps even a baby tub. Towels and washcloths are sold for babies, but if you dont have any already, dont worry. You can use regular ones until you are able to buy smaller ones for the baby.
Good luck! :)

Okay hope I can help you will need:
Someplace safe for the baby to sleep
crib/mattress (my son was in his crib at 5 weeks)
car seats
stroller
diapers
clothes (buy some in different sizes since you're not sure exactly what size you'll need, remember for a cute coming home from the hospital outfit since you'll take a gazillion pictures)
a safe place to bathe your baby, they sell baby baths
baby soap
washcloths
nice warm towels
diaper cream
small nail clippers or file
bottles/bottle nipples/formula &/or breast pump
bibs
swing (this was so helpful for my son, he napped here)
socks/booties & mittens
nasal bulb aspirator
toys that are birth age appropriate
blankets (big enough to swaddle with)
mobile once the baby is in a crib
pack & play
sheets for crib & pack & play
baby carrier to wear if you want one (I think i used mine 2 times)
pacifier (my son used it about 5 minutes twice so I don't recommend buying more than once)
cloth diapers to use as burp clothes (very, very helpful!)

That's all I can think of off the top of my head. Send me an email if you need more help njyecats@yahoo.com

Not as much as the stores would have you believe.

*Lots of love

*a warm place to sleep - crib, bassinette, cradle or your bed, if you choose to co-sleep

*diapers - I would highly recommend looking into cloth diapers - they are much easier than they used to be - and so cute!!!

*clothing - don't wash and dry more than a few outfits - we did everything we got at our shower and there was so much he was already too big for!!! and we couldn't return it!

*If you breastfeed, a breast pump is really nice. Also keep the number of a lactation consultant or a friend that has breastfed handy. Nursing pads, nursing bras, lanolin for sore nipples.

*if you don't breastfeed, you will need bottles and formula.

* a baby tub is nice, but they take up a ton of room. If you can find an inflateable one, I would get that.

*I love having a changing table, but lots of people just change their baby where ever.

*carseat

*small portable bouncer is nice

*a sling - check out www.hotslings.com I wish I had gotten one sooner. I loved ours!

*swing - not a need, but definitly nice to have

Things you don't really need now:
highchair
activity station/ bouncer

A car seat, I would say at least 5 packs of newborn diapers, formula (unless your planning to breast feed), bottles- Playtex nursers are really good, pacifiers, bassinette, swing, bathtub, diaper rash cream, Mylicon drops for gas, childrens Tylenol drops, cloths to put over your shoulder when burping baby so he/she won't spit up on you, undershirts that snap, one piece terry cloth sleepers, receiving blankets, extraction bulb (it's this thing that is used to get mucous out of their nose if it's runny or stuffy). That's all I can think of that you would need right away. I hope this gives you some ideas.
May God bless you and your new baby.

bassinet then crib in about 3 months...(better to keep them close!)
Bottles(i recommend playtex ventaire natural shape or dr browns wideneck)
...formula (if you go that route..i recommend nestle goodstart)or a breast pump
Clothing (onesies, sleepers, outfits, bringing baby home outfit..dont buy much they grow quick. have a few newborn sizes..then more 0-3M stuff)
Baby Bathtub and all needs(shampoo, lotion, wash)
Gas relief (little tummys or mylicon)
Burp rags
diapers and wipes(pampers swaddlers/pampers sensitive wipes)
when its time for a crib you need bedding and matress..all those needs
pacifiers (i recommend the soothie or Nuks)
Pack N Play w/ bassinet level if you travel with a baby..mine still sleeps in her bassinet level @ 1 year
Changing table (isnt a must..but is very nice to have!)
Dreft (to wash clothing in)
Bouncer
Swing
Stroller
Carseat(infant or the convertable 5-40lb)
Monitors( if baby ends up in another room)
Diaper Bag
Prince Lionheart Slumber bear (helps baby sleep..it wasa life saver!)

oh and another thing you can do, is get with some girls you know that have like a 1-2 year old and still have all their baby stuff. I got lots of hand-me-downs. i got lots of towels, wash cloths, onesies, clothes, sleepers, etc!!

unless you have alot of rich friends you most likely need to buy the big stuff like the car seat(u have to have one before you leave the hospital)crib, bassinet, cradle swing, bedding stuff like that but its best just to save up money and wait to buy things like clothes and blankets untill after you have your baby shower..mine was planed for a month before my daughter was to be born be she decide to come 3 days later..
