Do not write on the envelope any words whatsoever. Simply slash through the address \ (like that). That tells the mail man that the people don't live there anymore. A slash is all you need. People write very misleading messages on envelopes, so to avoid all that simply slash through the address. However, first determine that the address is correct and the letter is delivered correctly, but to the previous occupants. If you receive a misdelivery, a letter that belongs on the next street, write nothing on the envelope, but simply put it back into your mailbox for pickup. That is all you do with mail that doesn't belong to you. Put that mail back immediately into your box and don't allow it to sit on your coffee table for days or weeks. That is a serious Federal no-no. Once you see mail that doesn't belong to you immediately put it in the outgoing box with either a slash or no markings. Customers who vent on a misdelivered letter are defacing someone else's mail. Don't do that.

Write "return to sender - no longer at this address" and put it back in the mail.
Or take the mail to the real estate and see if they have a forwarding address for the old tenant

If it's not junk mail, right on it return to sender address unknown. Junk mail without a request for an address correction will not get sent back to the sender, trash it.

That's simple.Take the previous tenants mail and write on the front of it "No longer at this address-Return To Sender", and then place it back in your mail box.

Just scratch out the address, write "Moved, return to sender" beside it and pop it back in the mail box.

Tell the post office not to deliver them to you, that the previous tenant has moved. The post office should return them to the sender- it is not your responsibility

GET A CARDBOARD BOX AND PUT IT ON THE FLOOR NEAR YOUR MAILBOX WITH SIGN ON IT THAT READS: return to sender. THROW ANYTHING THAT IS NOT YOURS IN THERE
