We have always had spies in this country. Spies are in every country. It's a fact of life.
As for traitors, be careful who you accuse of that. "Let us never confuse honest dissent with disloyal subversion." -- Dwight D. Eisenhower.
As for loving the flag, in my opinion we have too many people who do. They turn it into an Idol. Remember, the flag is a symbol, and ONLY a symbol. The Constitution is the foundation of our system of government, but I could burn a printed copy of it and no one would bat an eye. Meanwhile, they're trying to desecrate the Constitution with a totally unecessary amendment to ban flag burning when this is something that almost never happens anyway. It's a non-problem. And they have several other amendment ideas in the works that would also desecrate our Constitution. I think a lot of our elected Representatives ahve never read it!
By the way, do you know who the biggest flag burners of all is? The American Legion! The burn old, worn-out flags in a retirement ceremony. So it's clear that it's not the burning of the flag that's the issue-- it's the EXPRESSION being made that they're trying to suppress. So don't let them tell you it isn't about Freedom of Expression that they're tyring to limit.
Justice Brennan pointed out that the ability to burn the flag is an expression of the very freedom it represents! That is why it must not be banned.

I love this country too.
Over the last 20 years or so, Americans have become very insular. We are beginning to believe that the whole world is just like here. We assume everyone has the same rights and freedoms that we do. We couldn't be more wrong.
We have begun to nit-pick every bit of news and try to spin everything into a political controversy. That didn't happen when Jack Kennedy or Ronald Reagan were President.
And yes, we have traitors and spies here, although I think the numbers are incredibly small.
There was a great article in Sunday's Parade magazine about what others have gone through before they made it here. It should be required reading for everyone who thinks America is bad.

Most Americans, by far, love our country. We disagree about many things, but most of those disagreements are just honest differences.
A great example is the attempt to enact laws to ban flag-burning. Some people believe that if you love the flag, you must prevent anyone from burning one. Others believe that if you love the flag, you must preserve the freedom for which it stands by allowing people to burn one no matter how much it offends you. The two sides disagree, but each side is sincere.
There might be traitors in our country, but there are few, and we are strong. There might be spies, but we are an open society that doesn't fear the revelation of secrets. We can be proud of our country and optimistic about its future.

I love being american - but think we should change our ways.
Control immigration - if they can't support themselves within so many days, send them back to their own country. Don't put them in free housing, give them foodstamps, free healthcare - that everyone's tax dollars have to pay for. SEND THEM BACK.
Control gas prices. Bush keeps promising to cut down our costs, but then has $40,000+ dinners daily. Have a picnic lunch for christ's sakes!
Control taxes. Quit funding all the other countries that aren't helping us, when we're never doing anything but helping them. Quit spending money on things that are unnecessary, like trips for the people in the office. They get a salary, tell them to live on their salary and quit living lavish lives on taxpayers' money.
Control who goes to war. Funny how most of the people that are in active duty - live in bases, get the big bucks from the government, aren't the ones in the war. It's always the reserves that go first. Send the ones that got paid for it - first!
Control monopolies. The government got smart on that decades ago, but the new governments have only helped corporations continue to monopolize the country.
Control overseas manufacturing. Punish the companies that do this - as by them doing so, hundreds of thousands of Americans lose their jobs.
Control crime. Have more states have death penalties. Allow death penalties for child rapists. Instead of spending so much tax money to keep them alive & housed. Ridiculous!
I'm an American. I love my country. Just wish the government wasn't letting the country go to hell. When you live in a nice town, and see it become a taco bell hell, because of all the immigration that they let in - you become disgusted. Look at all the towns that were once beautiful, how much crime rates have risen.
I'm no commie. I'm not a terrorist. I'm not even a hateful person. I'm a single mom, who busts my *** day in and day out to pay for my family. And knowing that the government takes so much of MY childrens' money for their complete BS - really is a hurtful thing.
And all I can do is be an American. Vote for the ones that want a better government. Vote for the ones that want better for our country. Clean up our country, so the whole thing doesn't turn into a complete shithole.

I love America and I have served our country. I've been to the Smithsonian and seen Old Glory, and I've been to Fort McHenry, where I saw a replica of the same flag, and heard the whole story about how Francis Scott Key wrote our national anthem. I proudly fly our nation's flag in my front yard. Just replaced a faded one yesterday with a new one!
Oh, and by the way, I'm a liberal, so that blows a bunch of stereotypes out of the water, doesn't it? ;-)

It is becoming harder and harder to respect a flag that our so-called leader is using for toilet paper. It is important to realize that a patriot is someone who thinks his country is the best one on Earth because he was born there. It is OK to love your country, but not when it is wrong. Loving your country when it is wrong is jingoism.
