Why did they do that?

does anyone know why kamakaze pilots wear helmets? i mean, they were like suicide bombers so why did they care about any sort of safety measures while they were doing that? if anyone has a good answer and a very reliable source i want the source...either a website or something proving why they did this. non serious answers are welcome as well...but i really want to know the answer. actually, my friend Rocky wanted me to ask this b/c he really does not get it and he wants to know.

I cannot state that this is a fact, but I'll give it a shot.

The Japanese Zero was very fast and acrobatic. However, it would become significantly clumsier when carrying a 500 lb. bomb. In trying to evade the planes actively trying to shoot him down before he reached his target the kamikaze pilot likely faced a decent chance of being seriously banged around inside his cockpit. The helmet would prevent him from getting knocked out before reaching his target. Furthermore it provided a small measure of protection from incoming bullets. A suicide pilot does no good if he crashes into the ocean before reaching his goal.
