Have you learned about your heritage? Do you have family traditions that are grounded in your cultural or ethnic heritage? If not, you can't be expected to feel a connection. My family never talked about where they came from or had any "old world" traditions. Until I started researching my family as an adult, I didn't have any connection to my heritage either. Now that I know more about it, I do feel a part of it.

My heritage is so mixed up that I have no idea of where my father's parents came from. There are just too many different countries. My wife's grandparents came from still more European countries.
Considering the above, what sort of heritage do my children have. We're just Americans. Not Something-or-other Americans.
Just Americans, that's enough.

It something you're concerned about. No there isn't any duty to be a geneoligist so to speak. The past is a canceled check. It can be really boring. Personally I think it's kind of interesting, but no one will judge you for this. If they do, they are wrong.
Be proud of who you are if you get up in the morning and be the best person you can be.
