I've been dating a guy for 2 years or so.. and we've talked about marriage. He told me just a week ago that he doesn't necessarily want kids (I cleared it up for him by saying that I WILL have kids), and that his family name Patick doesn't necessarily have to live on. After my generation (if I take his last name), there will be no more Denneys, can I ask to take that name? Why is it the woman always takes the mans name anyway?

I'd like to sum this up for all of the ignorant respondents:
I told him "I WILL have kids", meaning he can take it or leave it and find someone else.

As for ppl against the name change.. I guess you're stuck in the minds of our Anglo Saxons mindset.

I'm not sure why the woman takes the man's name, but I think it's reasonable for you to ask him to take your name. After all, people want their family names to live on. I wouldn't suggest "forcing it" as your question suggests, though.
best of luck

in many countries, women keep their names. the dutch use the woman's name as there middle name (old time). spanish cultures involve both last names. it is ur choice. u can name ur kik Bill Smith even if ur name is Denney. so good luck.

You aren't married yet and are already TELLING this man who has declared he wants no children that he is going to have them. Next you TELL him that his name isn't good enough, he and the future children, that again, he doesn't want, have to take your name? If I was this man I would run as far from you as possible.

If you strong feel that it's not necessary to changed your last name then don't do it or just combine the two last names.

I hope he gets a vasectomy and never tells you. You are a horrible person and deserve to die old and alone for trying to force him to have kids he does not want.

You cannot MAKE him do anything, sweetie. He told you how he felt about having children and you totally disregarded his feelings...You THINK you cleared it up...I think you did not...I think he wants you to listen to him and consider his feelings! That name-change thing is the least of your worries!!!! Good Luck!

no he can't take your name but you can keep your name and just add his to it,because once upon a time men were dominate and because they still kind of are they won't change the rules

I wouldn't be cool with it, but your man sounds like a total wussbag, so he'll probably concede. I would consider any man that would be with a psychob*tch like you a wussbag.
