Be careful. Before advertising for a garage sale check with your state department of revenue. Some States, like Illinois, if your expected sales are more than a certain amount. (Illinois is $250) You may be liable for sales taxes.

the best place is probably craigslist for a garage sale. Its completely free.

check the local newspaper's website ...
in my area there is a community forum.
there is also website called freecycle.org that will allow you to put anything on that you want to GIVE away, and most of the local groups have a group that allows idea/info exchange.
neither is really advertising, but it may get the word out to people in your area.
