Short answer, 4 - 8 hours.

Longer answer, it depends on your flow and the absorbency of your tampon. Use the LEAST absorbent tampon you can get away with. If you can use a Regular, don't use a Super.

Besides the obvious leakage concerns, the reason most people say not to use tampons for too long is the risk of Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS). However, tampons were used without incident for about 50 years. Then in 1979 - 1980 there were hundreds of TSS cases, including over 40 deaths. After investigation, they found that one brand of tampon carried much greater risk of TSS. The brand, Rely, was removed from the market. We now have only about 5 or 6 cases a year. Of course, women still have to be careful not to "forget" a tampon, but other than that, there are very few risks.

Change it every 4-6 hours.

If you don't change it, you might develop Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS). It's a bacteria that is not pleasant and requires hospitalization.

Signs of TSS include diarrhea, fever, chills, nausea...

If you show signs, call your doctor immediately or go to the emergency room.

Change them every four to six hours.

Change them often, otherwise you run the risk of TSS (Toxic Shock Syndrome).

It's rare, but almost always deadly.
