S.E. Hinton wrote several books with similar themes to the Outsiders. Like the ones mentioned above, some were made into movies.
However, you might be thinking of the classic movie musical, The West Side Story, it also has a similar theme to it...

S.E. Hinton wrote The Outsiders. She also wrote Rumble Fish, Tex, and That Was Then, This Is Now, all of which were made into movies around the same time.
Matt Dillon was in 3 of them - The Outsiders (as Dallas), Rumble Fish (as Rusty-James), and Tex (as Tex). Emilio Estevez was also in 3 - The Outsiders (Two-Bit), Tex (Johnny) and That Was Then, This is Now (Mark). Diane Lane was in The Outsiders (Cherry) and Rumble Fish (Patty).
I was the ultimate Outsiders geek - I saw it in the theater when I was 13, and read the book dozens of times. I even gave my list of trivia questions (for the book) to my brother's English teacher and he used it as an extra credit quiz.
