I've noticed the same thing. Back in the 1980s, nobody had a personal computer, and there were not that many home video games (compared to now). Also, the home games at the time had poor to fair graphics.... while arcade game had (comparably) great graphics. So kids would go to arcades because it was an experience they couldn't get at home. Now kids at home have big screen TVs, high-end sound systems, and cutting edge graphics on their home game systems, some which match or rival arcade systems. The short answer is arcades are not as good now as they were in the 1980s because home systems have caught up or surpassed them, and arcade game makers have not figured out how to compete.

because ever since home consoles first hit the shelf's there was really no need to go play games some where else when you could just own a console and play it all you want when you want ,therefore arcades just became something to do for fun as the next best thing and the popularity dropped, but to this day there are some that hard core old school gamers that play only in arcades and arcade games just dint have what it takes to compete with today's graphically beautiful games due to the inferior hardware

In the early days of gaming, the arcades offered better games. Graphically, or otherwise. Nowadays, the games in arcades are nothing compared to what you can get in a console.
Only thing that keeps arcades going is the experience. Arcade Time Crisis is a millions times better with 4 other people standing with you.

I miss the arcades as well, and older than you. Even as an adult in the 80's, I would spend a couple of hours playing video and pinball games in the arcades. It is my believe that PC games, and advanced home computer game sytems are the reason the arcades are gone. The few that are out there have to charge more, and still do not make a healthy profit. They try to make a profit by combining entertainment with food (example is Gameworks).

First, it is inflation so everything will be more expensive (inluding arcades). Second, people prefer to play online with other people at the same time. I personally found arcades are still fun (especially their racing games like Daytona 500 and Manx TT). Third, probably the graphic, sound, and the choice of games are better in home consoles than arcades.
