I live in the country, and have a field that borders my property close to the house. The farmer who owns the field won't hay it, so it's a major nuisance. I've tried "SnakeAway" powder, but it didn't work. Yesterday I found a young garter snake in my daughter's bed! Two weeks ago I removed a 3 foot milk snake from the house. I have called the conservation department, but they had no suggestions. I don't mind snakes, but I don't want them in my house.

First off. Thank you. There are so many people here with questions like yours that also include "I didn't know what kind it was so I chopped it's head off with s shovel." I'm glad you are removing the snakes rationally instead of kill it first ask questions later. You might want to go around the house and look for any openings where they might be coming in. Basement would be a good start. Also any vents that might be a way in for them. Some snakes can climb trees so check ant windows close to trees. Or any trees that might be hanging over a roof near a window. You can spread mothballs around but make sure the kids or any other pets wont get into them. They should keep the snakes away. The snake away should work. If it's not that means they are getting in through another place you didn't think of.

It is nice to know some people don't kill snakes the instant they find them in their yard...or yet their house. I believe, if I read correctly, that more than half the people bitten by snakes each year were trying to kill the snake in the first place...
l'm surrounded by a field, except for the road, and I've never had a problem with snakes before. Well, except that back yard snake each summer, but that's about all. I would try the moth balls if you haven't already. Just put them right at the edge of the field. Then I would try to find out where they are coming in from. Maybe they sneak in windows, doors, maybe under the house somewhere.

Depending on how big a house you have, try buying a few boxes of mothballs and spread them around your house , put them right up against the house foundation on the ground and put a small handfull at any openings you think they may get in. We have snakes in our area and i was told about this idea when i moved onto this house , i haven't ever had a snake inside. I guess they don't like the smell of the mothballs.

You should get some mothballs and spread them all around the house, especially where you think they could get in easily. Cats also would be a good idea, since snakes are afraid of them. If any snake is brave enough to cme into your house again, that cat will get 'em good.

Find the route the snakes are entering your house & block it ie. repair any holes etc, going into the house.
They may also be entering via open doors or lower windows.
I don't agree with using the loose housecats as they will kill any small animal, birds, lizards, you name it. But they would probably cut down on the snake population, unless you have venomous snakes & then you will lose cats.

Get some cats. Keep them outside. Cats will kill and hunt what snakes do.....like mice and moles.
