Right now in this heat, my fan is my biggest supporter.
Now if I was hanging from my ceiling fan, I would also be my own athletic supporter....lol

Yes, in a way it is the same thing. An Athletic supporter protects the Athlete's balls. It hold them safely and when the Athlete is done with it, it tosses them.
The fan on the other hand, also holds the Athlete's balls; different kind of balls, such as boosting his ego, paying for tickets to see him and hence making his life more comfortable. Also a Fan buys the crap which the Athlete may endorse, **** like colognes, cereals, soft drinks, clothes, cars..etc..etc... And just like the supporter, when the Athlete no longer needs the support, he tosses the fans aside as well. Its the same thing at the end of the day. So the answer is YES.

I am assuming that you are not meaning athletic supporter the jock strap or cup. In this answer I am assuming that you are talking about someone who supports athletics.
So, with that said, I am going to say NO, and here is why; a fan is someone who admires an athlete. I see an athletic supporter as someone who supports athletics in general and not necessarily a particular athlete. Then it would be athlete supporter.
But I can see how someone would feel that they are one and the same. Hope this helps

Actually, I keep a fan inside my athletic supporter. It really cools me off.

No. You plug a fan in, turn it on&it blows a breeze to cool you off.An athletic supporter is worn by a male jock to support his maleness.
