What is your definition of "extremely well"? If you merely want to be the best player in your neighborhood, then reading a couple of chess books combined with a lot of playing would probably be sufficient. If your aspirations are much higher, becoming an International GrandMaster (GM) takes years of study and practice. Furthermore, even given that a person is willing to put in the effort to become a GM does not mean they will succeed. Like professional sports, becoming a great chess player requires a fair amount of natural talent.
If your question was casual in nature, then disregard the following as it is not relevant. However, if you are serious about becoming a good player, then read on. I am a rated Expert in the U.S. Chess Federation (USCF). This places me in the top 6% of all tournament players in the country. I state this not as a boast, but rather as evidence that the advice that I am about to give you is sound. The fastest way to improve is to join your local chess club and to play in tournaments. You can also improve by reading books or taking lessons from a strong player. Analyzing the games you play with your opponent (especially the games you lose) can also be quite helpful. If you are a resident of the United States, then you will want to join the USCF.
The USCF website is http://www.uschess.org/
Good luck!

First of all you need to ask someone who has played the game for a while on how to play. Then when you get used to the movement of the pieces then you need to understand which strategy will be best for you.
Beginning with a very defensive strategy is wise for beginners. Do not leave to many important pieces hanging out to be killed early in the game. Use your pawns wisely to guard your better pieces.
Try and take out the oppenents pieces one at a time. By doing so, you weaken their defenses.

To be a good player requires some foresight, a plan and lots of attention to detail.
To be a great chess player requires lots of foresight (like 30+ moves and consequential elements of logic), knowledge of your opposition, and a familiarity with the greats, as well as attention to detail.

Get some literture or CD tutors and practice. Also play games by yourself, play both sides, alternate between games. This way u can take ur time and analyze ur decision.
Ultimately ur goal should be
1. to establish serveral openings ur comfortable with.
2. ability to disturb ur opp. games.
3. trading pieces while improving ur position.
4. perhaps most importantly plan and straterg-ized :) sort of speak
