You will have to determine what kind of ants you have in order to create a workable control program. Once you know that, you can use the proper ant repellents and baits to eliminate them. Repellents include vinegar, cayenne pepper, citric extracts, cinnamon and even perfume.

Baits that work include boric acid and yeast. Mix 1 tablespoon of boric acid with 6 ounces of peanut butter and jelly, wet cat food, mayonnaise or whatever the ants are feeding on. You may also mix 1 part dry yeast with 2 parts molasses and 1 part sugar.

If you prefer to use a pest control operator, try to find one that is environmentally friendly and who will put the safety of your children first.

my wife and i live in an older home and also have this problem. we have pets and pesticides were a concern for us also. the best solution i have found so far is an ant trap. i use a round metal one about 1 1/2 in. in diameter.place them where you see the ants, but also where any pets or children can't get at them. to keep the ants out sprinkle 20 mule team borax around the rooms next to the baseboards.

I always had great success with eliminating ants by first finding out what they like best, normally something sweet like Coke, maple syrup, honey or else. Then I mix some boric acid (white powder, buy it in tne drugstore) into the atractant, make kind of a slush out of it. Put it in their way. They'll suck on that stuff for sometimes 6 to 8 hours and after 24 hours there will be no more nuisance.
You might have to repeat for more than one nests,
Good luck
Mike

An old wive's tale says that you can sprinkle a line of ground cinnamon across the area the ants are coming in. Supposedly ants will not cross over the line.

Boraxo mixed with corn sugar. Heat corn sugar, don't let it biol or come close to that, add the Boraxo, let it cool. Place a small amount on a piece of paper where they travel. will die out in a few days. Mix a stong solution. If they are not sugar ants then you may need to call an extermiator.

mix 2 to 4% boric acid (sold as roach proof) with either honey or peanut butter, depending on what the ants eat. feed them for 3 weeks or so. The boric acid is basically used as a laundry additive and water treatment chemical. no effects on humans.

the rally clean thing is a crock of hooey. My mother's house was spotless yet she still had ants until she sprinkled around borax and diatomacious earth. the borax repels them, and the diatomacious earth will kill insects but is not lethal to animals.

Ants come in to look for food and water. You can't leave crumbs anywhere.
