Active sonar creates a pulse of sound, often called a "ping", and then listens for reflections of the pulse. To measure the distance to an object, one measures the time from emission of a pulse to reception. To measure the bearing, one uses several hydrophones, and measures the relative arrival time to each in a process called beamforming.
Passive sonar listens without transmitting. It is usually employed in military settings, although it is occasionally used in science applications

Active sonar is a process where a sound or wave pulse is directed out in a radial or focused pattern in an effort to receive a reflected or bounced back signal. Passive sonar is the active listening for an objects resonance or the sound it makes or another form of disturbance.

well

active sonar is just that: a sound wave is generated at a frequency that allows it to pass through water until it bounces off an object, where it is reflected back to the submarine and picked up on a phone. the time the sound wave travels through water is known, and the direction of reflection is determined by the pick up, so a targets range and position will be known.

passive sonar is the use of a device to just pick up the targets natural sounds, such as its propellers or engine noise and determine its relative position. by making multiple readings, it can also determine its range speed and direction. this allows you to find then without giving your own position away by active use of the sonar.

as far as whether a sound wave through water that can be considered physically destructive to an animal, i don't know. it would have to be extremely high powered to injure what passes for ears in the ocean. no as to whether it messes up the natural sonar of a sea animal is another thing all together.

Passive sonar listens for sounds that are then interpret by the operator. Active sonar transmits and sound wave and interprets the return wave when it bounces off of an object. That's the simplest explanation of it.

Hi. Passive sonar means just listening (for propeller sounds, say). Active sonar involves making a sound that will reflect off of vessels, etc.

Passive sonar uses just a fancy microphone, and emits no energy. No possible harm to any animals possible with this system.

An active system transmits acoustic energy like a radar transmits electromagnetic energy. The sound of energy of the acoustic transmissions can be harmful to marine life. Submarines also use active sonar.

passive sonar is quite simply: listening. A sphere, hull mounted array, or towed array of transducers or hydrophones detect sound waves in the water and depending on the time at which the sound wave reaches the various units, the computer system tells you which direction the sound is coming from. active sonar is is when a projector or transducer produces a sharp sound which travels outward in all directions and bounces of of other objects. depending on how long the sound takes to travel back to the spherical array you can tell where and how distant an object is. passive allows you to determine where and what an object is without giving your location away. active allows you to determine where and how far an object is but gives away your location.
