Wow! That is quite a question. The first space shuttle was launched in 1981, but research and testing for the shuttle was taking place in the early seventies. Rockwell is the name of the company that made the space shuttles orbiters. Lockheed-Martin makes the big, orange, external fuel tank. A company called Thiokol (I think the name has changed now) made the solid rocket boosters that fit on the sides. There are also many companies that made small parts for the shuttle that are no longer in business. To get the answer that you are looking for you would have to add up all the employees at these companies over the last 30 years or so, and all the scientists, researchers, astronauts, civilians, and members of the military to whom contributed to the project. You would end up with thousands and thousands of people. Now you know why NASA's 16 billion dollar budget doesn't go that far these days.
