I think I would have much rather lived in the 50's when families stayed together, women took care of their children and homes and visited with neighbor wives in their free time. I see it as a much less stressful time for families because everyone had a clear role. Dad supported the family and was the leader and mom ran the domestic front. Children were taught values and manners and not handed every thing like parents do now. There was disapline and it wasn't counted as child abuse, no stupid time out garbage. It was safer to go out at night because do to the lower number of illegitimate births from the low classes, there were less criminals out there as most people had both parents and mom wasnt sleeping with everyone in town. Radio and tv could be watched by anyone in the family without fear of something offensive being seen or heard. Kids didn't imitate gangsters and trashy pop stars. Women looked like women and men looked like men .

Yeah, sure. You weren't even alive in the 50's, so you have a rather ideal image of it. People smoked like chimneys, drank like fish, ate cholesterol like it was going out of style, and worried almost every minute about nuclear war with Russia. There were frequent recessions, putting large numbers of men out of work every 2 or 3 years. Women were not expected to be smart or have ideas or jobs or earn good money; abortions were illegal; divorced women were avoided by everyone. It was not a good time at all if you were Black.

You really came up with a great question. I think the 50's must have been the end of an era. What a time it must have been.

I agree with the traditional roles for men and women. It is when these roles are confused or merged that trouble begins. In any military, business etc, there has to be a clear and present leader and someone to make sure and help get things done. Why is it our society negates that fact now but can clearly see the results of this lapse?

I personally think it is parental responsibility to raise the children. Not let our government step in and make more "afterschool programs" to babysit more kids so the parents can mostly try to "keep up with the Jones'". I understand that single mothers need to work. But I think our government makes it easier to be divorced now than ever. Think of all the programs set in place now to help negate the need for both parents.

The 60's was when things started to deteriorate. Hmm.. wasnt that about the time that the birth control pill came into public use? Hmm.. makes you think. The freedoms we give ourselves usually make for even more problems.

To answer your question, yes I do think we were better off with the values of the 50's.

Yea, I believe the values of the 1950s and earlier were better.

The drug-makers started taking over the world right about the time our society started going really downhill. Coincidence?
