I was interviewed by a corp employer but they only hiring at about 2/3 less then what I am making now. My husband is torn & says don't take the job but it sounds like a great job with room for advancement. The gas & commute is killing me with 3 children at home I spent 2.5 hours a day on the road. I live in a rural area & this company is the largest employer. Any advice ? I have been working at my current employer for 13 years. stressed out...

Go for the new job. The money is not an issue. Your mental health is far more important. In 35 years of nursing I never took care of one old person who said "Gee I wish I had worked more"

That is a dilemma. Sounds like you want the change more than the money. Why is hubby saying no or, as torn implies, not sure? Is your budget so tight that you really can't afford the pay cut? At $3.00/gal and 2.5 hours on the road, maybe that would offset the pay cut? How much would you save per month on gas? Not to mention your increased time at home. That is worth a lot too. When you say 2/3 less than, I am assuming that you mean 66% of what you're making now not 66% less than you're making now. Is it likely that after 13 years at your current employer that you have a chance at promotion or a significant raise? Is there any possibility to negotiate the pay up a little by saying you would really like to work there but a 33% pay cut is an awful lot to take? Most companies will try to get new employees at the lowest possible cost, but some do have a range depending on experience. Or, are you afraid they might withdraw the offer? These are all the questions that I'd be asking myself if I were in your shoes. Good luck at whatever you decide.

If you think about it you are probably already spending 1/3 of what you are making no gas alone. You are on the road 12.5 hours a day. With the way gas prices are you are spending that third on gas.

I would take the new job if it is closer and you have room for advancement (which generally means higher pay). If you can pinch the pennies for a bit until you advance than you can be home with your children and not spend so much time on the road going to work. Plus you say your current job stresses you out that can be good for your children or husband to have a stressed out you all the time.

My vote is take the new job.

if you are extremely burned out at your current job and dying to make a change, go for it. You can always do something on the side as well, if you need extra income. Take on a paper route. Do some very minimal hour accounting for a business. Volunteer at a food shelter and get a discount on a box of food, because you helped out. Just a couple of suggestions, but there are a lot more.

I would weigh out the differences. Is spending the money on the gas to drive 2.5 hours a day worth the extra money? How much closer is the new job? How much more time will the new job give you spend with your children? Then I would make my choice based on those answers.

Your time is worth money! How much do you make at your current job? Multiply it by 2.5...

Regardless of the results, commuting is a soul-destroying waste of time that could be better spent doing something worthwhile, for yourself, and for your family. You could take a class, play games with the kids, help them with their homework, join a bookclub, go to the gym.

Your TIME is worth it. I am actually moving to another city, just to eliminate my hideous commute. So I feel your pain. Take the new job! good luck.

I'll like to add..

In a large corporate environment, there will be many people fighting (just like you) to move to the top. Many of them are young, skilled and dedicated to the corporate politics et al.

You're a fulltime mom. In my opinion, I would stick with the old job because advancement in a large corporation will require a lot of work at may require you to spend more time at the corporate headquarters. (away from the family).

There will always be openings in your area. Just keep an eye out.

If there is definate room for advancement (ie, higher pay), the new job would be worth it because of the gas alone.

gas and not being stressed out is worth a lot...you may advance up in the future, but if money is the only thing that you value as success, stay there

You obvioulsy need to buy a new house.

I suggest you to save half your salary until you have enough for a down payment.
