If I access online financial accounts, can my passwords and data be seen by others on the network?

Are these on secure, encrypted sites? Then no. Clear text is easy to trap, but encrypted stuff is too much of a pain. Especially if your actual computer is right down the hall.

When you say "in-house," do you mean at home? Get better roommates.

Also, unless someone plants themselves between your router and whatever you're using to actually connect to the web (cable modem, csu/dsu, whatever), your traffic will be pretty hard to isolate in any useful amount. This means that the pr0n sites you're visiting are also still your business alone.

There are some ways in which your data etc can be seen by someone in your network :-

1. If they log on to the router and redirect the packets.
2. If you are on the same HUB as them. (Easiest way).
3. If you are on the same switch and they can configure SPAN/RSPAN on your port and capture the traffic.
4. You have wireless network which does not use security or uses weak security (read WEP).
5. They have access to your PC ( phew!)

So don't use hubs, secure your switch, router and PC.

If you are very very very concerned about your security then configure a VPN tunnel between your router and your machine. No chance of capturing the data in the internal network.

Edit : If they capture packets they can easily know which sites you are visiting. Http traffic is clear text. So make sure your financial data site at least uses https

If you have a home wireless network (LAN) and you are on one computer and your sister gets on another... and she gets on the internet, the only way she is going to be able to see what you have on your computer is if she has software to let HER take control of your computer, allow remote access, or she is really good at hacking.

While anything is possible... it is not likely. If it is financial information, it would be transmitted in an encrypted format on a secure connection. So even if someone could see the transmission, they could not read it.
