my wife says they come from spiders, I say they come from dirt or dust.

When a spider is done with it's web and moves on to a new location, it abandons it's old one.
It collects, dust, lint cat hair etc.
That's when it technicaly goes from a spider web to a cob web.
You're both right.

Cobwebs come from spiders, even if you do not see the spider.
Why do you never see a spider in it? You are too late. Fresh webs are nearly invisible. When you see a web easily it is already covered with dust and abandoned.

i've always wondered what a "cob" was, and do they spin webs? my thinking is that spiders spin webs, then vacate because of inactivity, and the left-over web attracts dust and dirt...why the cobweb name, i'm not certain.

It is not only threads spun by a spider.It is a network of intrigue.It can be confusion or indisticntiveness. There is an old saying: "Get the cobwebs out (of your head)".
