The Eiffel tower was built as the entrance arch for the World's Fair.
Originally the tower only had a 20 year permit (part of the contest rules were that the tower must be easily dismantled), but it became very useful for communications that they let it stay past 20 years. Eventually it just became the symbol of Paris, and a top tourism destination that the public, which originally hated it, decided that Paris would not be the same without it.

For an Exhibition. They used to have them a lot. Countries would throw up a pavilion and other stuff and exhibit goods and technologies, etc. World Fairs and like that. They seem to have stopped doing that.

for the world fair in Paris, in the 1899...
people thought it was a crazy monument, and that Paris would look ugly with that bizarre metal structure.....
now look at it....... It's the symbol of Paris!!!
