In the Lord of the Rings books, all distances are told in Leagues. How many Miles is to a league?

Bonus points for anyone that tells how long a furlong is.

A mile is seven leagues, so roughly 0.14 miles in a league. And isn't a furlong six feet, or am I thinking cubits?

In Anglo-Saxon measurements, One league is equivalent to 3 miles.
One mile is equivalent to 8 furlongs. Furlong stems from the phrase 'furrow long' and was used in reference to ploughable land.
There are thus 24 furlongs in a league.
One furlong equates to 40 rods.

Unless you mean Edward Furlong, star of Terminator 2, then there are only five feet and seven inches in a Furlong...

A league has varied at different periods and in different countries. In English speaking countries a league has usually been estimated at roughly 3 miles - 4.8 kilometers.
