I asked and really didn't get too many answers. My parents got away with not imunizing me. Now I am 15 and about to start high school in the fall. I have to have all my shots before I can start. What I wanna know is:
1. How many dr. visits will I have to go to for shots.
2. How many shots might I get each visit.
3. Will they hurt much.
4. Do they hurt more if I get more than one shot at a time?

You will have to get several different types of shots. You'll need:

--an MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella)
--probably a polio vaccine
--probably diphtheria/tetanus/pertussis
--and probably Hep B.

The Hepatitis B is a series of three shots. You get one shot, then you have to come back for two more before the vaccination is complete.

You could also get varicella, which is for chicken pox if you haven't already had it, or they may want to draw a titer. (A titer means they inject a small amount of the virus intradermally into your arm and wait to see if there's a reaction). I'm not positive they'll require you have the last one, though.

Really it will vary depending on which school you're going to. Are you sure you have never been vaccinated for ANYTHING?? Usually children are required to have proof of their vaccinations to attend elementary school or kindergarten.

Shots really are not as painful as everyone thinks, so don't worry! And even if you needed to get all these shots, I'm sure you wouldn't be given them all at the same time. How many doctor's visits you'll need depends on which of these shots you have to have.

Go see your family doctor and ask him all these questions, as well as all the others you will think of in the next few days. Your school MUST work with you if are doing your best to fulfill the requirements; so don't worry, even if you can't get it done in time, you won't fail freshman year over this.

You are reaching that age where you will start to make more of your own medical decisions. Now might be a good time to get to know your family doctor better. If you have been seeing a Pediatrician soon you will need a General Practitioner or Family Physician. You sound smart and responsible, use this opportunity to take the lead on your own health. When you go to the doctor, assume he will be speaking to you even if your parents are in the room. If he asks questions, be the one to answer them.

God Bless, and may you have a wonderful time in high school and the rest of your life.

PS. They usually don't hurt (that much) at the shot, but you may get a little sick or sore later.

You should find out if your parents did not immunize you due to an allergy to something like eggs. If not then they probably signed a freedom of religion or conscience waiver but no matter -you can either produce one or get the shots. The doctor will give you a combo shot and you will have to come back for another one in a few weeks-that's all. If you don't have time to get them all before school starts then get an affidavit to say you chose not to have it as it goes against your beliefs. A lot of parents are scared to immunize their kids because the mercury causes a huge increase in the risk of autism. As the Mother of an Autistic kid -when no family member in history had autism-I actually believe that there could be truth in this theory. So don't let anyone force you to do this-it should be your decision. As for the other answerers who are so quick to judge your parents-I wonder if they had an autistic kid who was born normal but developed autism AT THREE AND A HALF YEARS OF AGE after previously meeting all milestones early-as was the case with my son-how many of them would rush to immunize their other kids? People can be SO judgemental!!

1. Probably 2-3 as most immunisations can't be done on the same day as others (check with your doctor)
2. Polio vaccine is a liquid whilst chicken pox, tetnus etc are shots. If you are having hepatitis injections you'll need 3 at 3 separate visits
3. A little. Chicken pox doesn't hurt at all, tetnus is uncomfortable but it is all over really quickly. Just don't look and count to 10.
4. They will have to use different arms as they can't just put a 'shunt' (needle with tube attached) in your arm and pump vaccine in. Each vaccine is really delecately balanced, so I imagine they have to be administered on separate days to allow your body to absorb it. Polio can be done on the same day as a shot immunisation as it is absorbed differently.
My advice is to call your doctor and ask what he/she usually does. I'm sure you are not the only person who needs their vaccinations now. Good Luck!

Your Doctor, will be very happy you are attending to this problem, and will give you the best advice possible. Shots are not painful, just a little uncomfortable for a short time. Go! Go! Go! Have a great time in high school.

Your parents owe you BIG! How did they get away with that anyway. I had to show shot records for my kids before they could walk through the door for kindergarten.... Good luck buddy. They are not all that bad. It just stinks that you have to go through this at an older age. Kids are much better patients. (that from the mouth of my orthodontist)

First of all take a visit to your family doctor. Explain to them everything and she will be very nice about it all I am sure. They will give you good advice and a vaccination card which will have appointments for the vaccinations you will need. No worries, it does't hurt at all. I admire you for being very mature and getting this done on your own :). Always keep you card in a safe place for future reference at any time.

Grow up. 5 year olds get shots and don't whine as much. Let me meet your neglectful parents.
Shame on them and their stupid beliefs. You should have been taken away from them early on. Do you have siblings that are also in need of medical attention?
