i have an external hard drive that holds all of my music and i was moving stuff around the other day, organizing and creating new folders when all of a sudden it wouln't let me create a new folder. i can still move stuff around but i can't create a new folder; i keep getting an error that says "Unable to create folder 'New Folder' Data Error (cyclic redundancy check)". does this mean my hard drive is starting to fail?

no and yes
CRC errors are common on external drives based on how they are handled.
do a defrag of t he hard drive and check the drive for bad sectors.
run a chkdsk on the disk
using adminsitrative tools in windows or norton disk doctor to evaluate and mark thosee bad sectors so that it doesnt write ti the bad sector again and you might be good to go.

Possibly.

It does mean that there is now a spot on the hard drive that is unreadable.

#1) Copy the contents of the external drive to DVD or CD.
#2) Start/Run
#3) In the box, type "CMD" (without the quotes) and then enter.
#5) In the "DOS" window, at the prompt type:
chkdsk z:/R (where 'z' is the letter of your external drive)
#6) CHKDSK will then check the structure of the filesystem and make any repairs it can.
#7) If you get a message about open file handles, reply N to the question. The next prompt will ask if you want to run chkdsk on the next reboot. Answer Y.
#8) type EXIT to leave the "DOS" prompt
#9) reboot
#10) carefully check the files on the external drive and see what was damaged.

If the drive is under warranty, the contact the manufacturer.

Good luck!

As you can see, it is not necessarily the external hard drive, but it could be. It is usually the software or files that you are working with that are at fault.

Turn the external hdd off and unplug it from your computer. Shut down the computer. Check out the connections between the acutal hdd and its enclosure[inside the enclosure], and the cable from the enclosure to the computer, and plug it back into the computer. Turn the computer back on. Then try creating a new folder.
