what was the very first american movie sequel, and what was the very first american prequel?

Actually, I believe it was the early serials that would be considered as sequels to each other. Not each in the series, but the following series. Flash Gordon serials with "Buster" Crabbe would be the first examples that come to mind. I think he did two or three seperate serials. Also, the early Tarzan film series. King Kong and Son of Kong between the '30s-'40s.
As for prequels, I don't really know. I think they really have become more popular of late, so I can't really say what the first one was.

Im guessing, but i recall "The Thin Man, and then "After the Thin Man " was made shortly after. and thatw as a lon time ago.
