"Cape Cod" style houses are characterized by a steeply pitched roof. The attics usually have been converted to bedrooms, often with sloping ceilings. Often a dormer will house an upstairs bathroom.

I have seen apartments made our of the upstairs of these houses. A small kitchenette is added, and an outside stairway usually leads to a door where a window once existed.

In my part of the country, I have heard these refered to a Cape apartments.

I hope this helps.
