there's a lot about life that can't be learned from books.

There are a lot of different ways to learn things. Some of my most valuable experiences happened outside of school. Hence, the term, "on the job training." That is why so many people first out of school can't find a job because they don't have any experience.

Book-learning is very different from life. Common sense comes from experience. Wisdom comes from observation.

Take a look around you; everyone has something to teach you. Either by their bad or good example.

Don't let the ways and things you are taught in school stop you from learning things as you go through life. We all colour the things we teach others by our life experiences, if you let a cynic stop your wonder and curiosity for instance, you are letting him interfere with your education

as i see it, some people tend to spend their whole lives "learning and living" through books that they've never truly had a chance to learn and experience life outside of a school setting or a library. it's like when you see people who come out of college with a Phd and they still seem dumb or unaware of reality.

basically, i think the old man is saying, the real world is out there and its good you can read about a particular spot, but it's better if you can actually live ,or write a book about, your own experience. how much can you tell the world from inside a classroom or with your face in a book.

It means that you don't only learn in school. If you only care about how well you do in school and sacrifice many hours to your homework, you will miss many opportunities to learn about the important things in life that they cannot teach you in school. In other words there is a lot more to education than just going to school.

Nietzsche said it best when he said, "Many a man fails to become a good thinker for the sole reason his memory is too good."

Life is full of lessons....don't be like the cat that sat on a hot stove....she will indeed never do that again, but she will also never sit on a cold one (also Mark Twain)

learn as you go and don't let anything someone else told you keep you from learning for yourself and sharing your opinions with others. be your own man, man.

Public schools are designed like slaughter houses. Students are the cattle. Getting them processed is the goal.

Make the best effort to get an education in spite of the bureaucracy.

It means all of life is an education. Don't work so much or study so much that you miss out on the real life aspect of it. Those were very wise words indeed.
