No, happiness is no more an imaginary state than depression is, both are based in the brain, the seat of emotions, which IS what happiness is, an emotional state. In no way is emotion imaginary. If you "imagine yourself into a state of happiness???" like in Positive Reinforcement you mean like by writing over and over I will be happy? I doubt that works but many people do it, so who knows for sure. I would try Hypno-therapy from a certified psychologist or go to a local bookstore and look for a book-on-cd about it (there out there).
How would I define Happiness? Well, are you content with the direction your life is going? Do you love your family, friends and mate if you have one, or with whatever you DO have? Do you worry about your bills and if not are you content? If you can simply not worry about any of these answers then there is no reason at all you can't be absolutely happy. Even if you answered NO to all the above questions you can still be happy, its all IN YOUR ATTITUDE, nothing more. Some of the happiest people alive have absolutely nothing.

If we animals knew no pleasure.. there would be nothing to compel us.
Yes there is pain also. No pleasure isn't just a lack of pain.
If there was only pain and lack of pain
we'd have lemming'd long ago.
When you urinate, eat, ****, screw, run, finish your work, have a conversation, see the sunlight, you feel it.
And if you didn't, this whole thing couldn't work.
Happiness isn't so well-defined. Many want to say, after Aristotle, its eudaimonistic: known through activity. Others that it is more hedonistically identical to pleasure. It's such a lark. I think psychiatrists are just now begining to study it.. heh.

Happiness is defined contentedness. As far as imagined happiness... Everything that we feel is based on perception of the world around us, and we can choose to perceive things as good or bad. It's not about imagination, it's about perception.

No, we are mind, body, and spirit. We are happy when are three are in balance. All three work in unity to provide a state of health, and joy. Even when we are depressed, this is only temporary, for we know the balance in which we have achieved.

Life is more like a road trip, then a pair of shoes, functionallity is not enough. Life is a journey not a destination. You can only gain happiness through achievement. Happy is who you are.
