I don't usually take a strong pain killer but when I take something a bit stronger like ibrufen, my eyes go bloodshot and my throat feels like its swelling up. Any ideas why?

Yep, you are having a reaction to the pain reliever. Probably the chemical compounds in them. Try a natural pain reliever, like willow bark tea.

It is because you are allergic to that particular family of drugs. You should tell your physician ASAP and ask for his/her direction. Many people in the USA, even in the world, are allergic to ibuprofen and drugs in the "profen" family. You may also develop an allergy to aspirin, which is commonly developed with such an allergy. Please see your physician.

ibuprofen is not a pain killer, per say, but an anti-inflammatory medication, the symptoms you are experiencing should be discussed with your doctor
