Hi, the reason why people don't say the truth straight out and feel that they have to lie is because they are scared. For example: if someone did something wrong their afraid of the punishment, so they think their getting off easy by lying. Another reason people tend to lie rather than tell the truth is that they don't feel confident the way they are so they make up stories to make themselves sound all great like their fantasy person they wished they were. They don't realize that by lying they are just making things worse for themselves.

Too many reasons. The truth can hurt and people don't want to hurt their friend or relative so they lie. Lying can also get a person out of alot of bad situations. I honestly do lie and i do regret is SOMETIMES. Yes, i do wish everyone should say the truth and be honest but sometimes it can be hard. Its life. Where there is good,there is bad. Everything needs an opposite to be complete.

I suppose the reason most people lie is to save their own skin and to avoid embarrassment, but there are also more positive, compassionate reasons why people lie. Perhaps it is to save someone from embarrassment, or to avoid hurting someone's feelings needlessly, or perhaps they truly believe in the old phrase "Ignorance is bliss."
Truthfully, everybody lies for different reasons, and a lot of lies are told with good intentions. If people lie they generally feel that they have good reason to. It's a hard question really, because it's like asking "Why does anyone kill?" or something vague like that. You can't truly know unless you ask everybody, which would sure as hell take a long time!

Because the truth hurts, although I've found that many times even though the truth hurts, discovering the lie hurts even worse.....

I agree; that is why I have chosen to live by the truth. it feels so much more refreshing to know that you are not hiding anything from anyone! I love it

people are creatures of culture, it would be chaotic if everyone told the truth about everyhing, possibly even war
