No, I do not get your point. The world bank and others have given billions to the corrupt governments in Africa where is this money now? Just giving them money is useless. Solve their problems, in ways the the rebels can not steal. Much of the food shipments just give to Africa is stolen by the officials and the rebels, they do not reach the people.

Bill Gates is actually do more for Africa than many whole nations do. His vaccine program is saving millions of childern. The funding he provides to researchers the world over help them learn about and stop real diseases all over. Companies and US or European university researchers do not care about the issues that affect poor nations. He has funded many programs for safe water. Safe water will save more than viagra any day. Heart dissese drugs, obesity drugs, viagra - none of these the poor need. Let Gates do his work, he is and will even make a bigger difference.

Just remember we can not control other governments, Bill Gates can not create a government in most of these locations that want to help their people.

Rebels and bad governments are much of the problem in Africa.

From what I've read, Bill & Melinda's foundation is currently focusing on: 1) eradicating super-killer diseases such as HIV, malaria, tuberculosis and 2) improving the educational system in the USA. With Warren's money, I hope that the foundation can expand it's education drive to include the poor nations that partly because of the foundations' help will have even more people living and thus vying for a decent education and other infrastructure and opportunities.

You're my heroes, Bill, Melinda, and Warren!

By your math, each of us would receive about $9.57. A tidy sum indeed for those who live in the abject poverty of less than $1 a day.

The Gates Foundation website lists that it helps the Carter Center (which is fighting River Blindness in central Africa), the development of an HIV vaccine, several worldwide immunization programs (polio, anyone?), and a number of endowments to institutions of higher learning.

It can't be ascertained how much is going to the cause and how much is eaten in administrative costs, since the Foundation hasn't opened its books to a reviewing entity such as Charity Navigator.

I agree more needs to be done in Africa. But more needs to be done in many places. Which is more important - landmines in the Sudan, water parasites in the Congo, earthquake relief in Indonesia, crop failure in Kashmir?

At least something is being done.

I doubt all those billions will actually benifit anybody significantly. In all likely hood it'll be eaten up by administrative costs or thrown away in one time fish givings rather than teaching somebody how to fish or building technologies which enable economic independence for poor nations. With Gates involved I'll be shocked if a large chunk of that doesn't just mean giving windows away to many poor nations. Gates has never before shown a generous bone in his body. Why would he change now?
