Hi pal
I'm not too sure of the year although it must be about 65 / 66 as the other poster said.
But I do know WHO the first Sub to come on in a Football match was.
It was a game played in Scotland at Love Street Stadium home of St Mirren FC and the player in question was ARCHIE GEMMILL, who went on to play for Derby & Nottingham Forest among others and is most famous for scoring a wonder goal for Scotland v Holland at the World Cup in 1978
Hope this will be of help too you
Owen

They have never been used in football, but I believe they will shortly be introduced for water polo.
Annette, I'm so sorry that my nonsense is your only answer so far. Fingers crossed...
