Because they don't have the floating rear axel like trucks have.

I had a 76 Chevy Short Box. It had a 12 bolt in back and a Dana 44 in front. It was 1/2 Ton. I Saw a Grand Prix with Ford 9 in Axles and 44in Super Swamper Boggers on it.

they are considered trucks because of their gross vehicle weight rating, which begins in the area of 5000 lbs. They do not use the same axles as the average passenger car. Also the vehicle purpose comes into the equation in most states

No domestic truck I know of uses a passenger car axle.
It would render them unable to tow or haul payload.
Typical truck axles are 3.55-4.11 gear ratio.
Cars, if used a truck axle, would weigh too much,
and the mpg would go down.
typical car axle ratios are 3.00 to 3.30
