I would call that an invitation to visit the repair shop. Uh, you might want to call the tow truck before the steering goes out and you endanger someone on the street because you are going forward but can't turn. I wouldn't want to be on the sidewalk nearby when it quits.

if the sound is like "tak-tak-tak-tak..." when you are turning the wheel with the car in motion, it is the CV joint.
try turning the steering wheel lock to lock while the car is standstill and engine running,if you hear the grinding sound then power steering fluid is below the minimum level. check for leaks.

Ask your mechanic, if you wish, to check the steering stops. He or she might suggest just lubricating them. This might unfortunatly be a temporary fix if they do not first remove the old lubrication.
You can also ask, if you wish, how much it would cost to have the steering stops replaced.
