If I may turn the question around, what do you do?
The queen has given her life to the service of this country. Prince Charles has contributed enormously in many ways to help others.
All of the Royal Family have full engagement books.
Australia recently held a referendum to become a Republic. The proposal was rejected.
Taking everything into consideration I would far rather the Royals continue as the thought of becoming a third rate banana republic with a President Blair, Prescott, Straw, Byers, Milliband et al fills me with loathing.
It is easy to submit ignorant and crude comments to these pages with the added assurance the Royals will, by the dictates of their position, have no chance of replying.
A recent poll on Teletext revealed a resounding yes vote for keeping the Royals.

The Royal Family has been an important part of the UK for many many years. They are still important today, even after having resigned from most of their powers.
The UK constitution is made up of 6 sources. These include Works Of Authority, Statute Law and of course the Royal Prerogative. This is a power for use in emergencies and to override Parliament.
They also create a lot of money from tourism and are a figure head of the UK, Britain and more specifically of England.
They create a lot of Charities including the Princes Trust (Prince Charles) and a number of Public Awareness, just think of how much Charity work Princess Diana did until she sadly passed.

As a Canadian I am proud to call Queen Elisabeth my queen. They don't do anything though with the exception of giving those who have no life something to talk about. Is Prince William still in college? Is Prince Charles getting along with his new wife? Why do people care? Why don't people seem to care about other royals outside of the UK? Why don't people pick on the other royals?

could 'the royals' just be an instance of "inherited wealth" gone to the extreme?
it's odd that the (apparently) universal wish to create situations where "your own" children can "do better" ... means that "others' kid" are disadvantaged withOUT this extra assistance from parents withoiut resources ... which then leads to vast inequities in the social fabric?
royals are just "visible" / obvious ...
the more subtle effects are all around but most people are in denial
go figger

They dont do much today. Countries that have royals, have them basically for Public Relations. They've just become celebrities. Its cool to have a king or queen... its classy, noble, and as country makes you seem very respectable and full of tradition.

I think that Charles had over 600 functions or places to attend last year that is 2 or 3 every day can you imagine any mormal person having to be on the ir best behaviour well dressed and going from one place to another being loaded with info whats going on and who is who ..No thanks .
They fill a function and if they did not do it ,maybe we would end up with some like John prescott and his wife playing royalty

they bring in alot of money from tourism, but do we need them ?
no, people would still visit London even if we had no royal family, even just to see the palace, i mean how many tourist head down to the palace and actually see the queen 0.01% i reckon if any. open up the palace totally as a museum of history charging a entrance fee.

there is no point to them ... we should stop paying taxes to keep them and make them go out to work like the royals in Denmark ... as for Charles all he has done is open up at centre in my area where the muggers and drug deals hang out this place was meant for kids ,,, well done they now have a place to hide and staff that cover for them while the kids go without once more

prince charles does 'a lot' of 'work' with the princes trust. he has built poundbury in dorset, a village which is a model village and a tempate for all future new housing developments. it used local skills and materials and has sort ways to combat congestion and car travel (AND SUCEEDED!) and it has helped find better ways of community cohesion. all in all not a bad project with many other countries (inc. usa surprisingly) looking in on the sucess.
he also promotes and runs a organic farm and generally is a good tourist attrcation for the UK.
