It is a country in the Balkans (southeastern europe) just north of Greece.
The term can also apply to a historical region but nowadays most commonly refers to the country.

Macedonia has nothing to do with Greece! It has been a neighbouring country for over 2000 years. Language spoken in Macedonia today is Slavic, a dialect of Bulgarian.
Saying Macedonian is Greek is like saying Chinese and German are the same.
Macedonia was a part of Bulgaria and still is-culturally.
The Greeks commited a genocide in Agean Macedonia 80 years ago, killing and expulsing all Bulgarians and importing brown Greeks from the Middle East, mostly Turkey.
Now Northern Greece(former Bulgaria) is still a part of ancient Macedonia, but remaining Bulgarian people haven't been able to keep non-Greek names and speak their language, so their Bulgarian heritage is almost lost.

The problem is when in many countries history is teached with many mistakes, on purpose (most times) or not.
Listen,
Macedonia (Îακεδονία - in greek) is a part of Greece (Hellas is the REAL name of Greece). It is the northern part of Greece and ''capital'' is the Thessalonika (ÎεÏÏαλονίκη).

As I can see there is a lot of confusion about Macedonia! A lot of people mix up the history of real Macedonia in Greece with a Slavic state that emerged from Yugoslavia and uses the same name!
Let’s start from the beginning!
Macedon or Macedonia was the name of an ancient Greek kingdom (Greek “Îακεδονία” from Greek word “Makos” attic “Mekos” meaning length!)(The birth place of Alexander the Great.) in the northern-most part of ancient Greece, bordering the kingdom of Epirus on the west and the region of Thrace to the east and Paionia (present day Slav Macedonia) to the north. It was of course a Greek kingdom and the most important thing to remember is the fact that Alexander the great and his real Macedonians build a gigantic Greek empire and they spread Greek culture and civilization all over the known word! Alexander him self is responsible for the founding of 70 Greek cities with most important of all the famous city of Alexandria!
Even in present day Macedonia is the biggest province in Greece!
As I said before there is also a Slavic state that emerged from Yugoslavia and its name is Makedonija or Slavic Macedonia! That state is using the Greek name Macedonia and its causing a great confusion with real Macedonia in Greece! United Nations and European Union has forced Slavic Macedonia to negotiate with Greece in order to reach to an international name that it will not violating Greek history and interests.
The state of Slavic Macedonia (Makedonija has never claimed officially any connection with real Macedonia in Greece and the have stated officially that they are a Slavic state!
Here are the most official statements from the government of Makedonija:
The first President of FYROM (Slav Macedonia), Kiro Gligorov said: “We are Slavs who came to this area in the sixth century ... we are not descendants of the ancient Macedonians" (Foreign Information Service Daily Report, Eastern Europe, February 26, 1992, p. 35). Also, Mr Gligorov declared: "We are Macedonians but we are Slav Macedonians. That's who we are! We have no connection to Alexander the Greek and his Macedonia… Our ancestors came here in the 5th and 6th century" (Toronto Star, March 15, 1992).
On 22 January 1999, Ambassador of the FYROM to USA, Ljubica Achevska gave a speech on the present situation in the Balkans. In answering questions at the end of her speech Mrs. Acevshka said: "We do not claim to be descendants of Alexander the Great … Greece is Macedonia’s second largest trading partner, and its number one investor. Instead of opting for war, we have chosen the mediation of the United Nations, with talks on the ambassadorial level under Mr. Vance and Mr. Nemitz." In reply to another question about the ethnic origin of the people of FYROM, Ambassador Achevska stated that "we are Slavs and we speak a Slav language”.
On 24 February 1999, in an interview with the Ottawa Citizen, Gyordan Veselinov, FYROM'S Ambassador to Canada, admitted, "We are not related to the northern Greeks who produced leaders like Philip and Alexander the Great. We are a Slav people and our language is closely related to Bulgarian." He also commented, “There is some confusion about the identity of the people of my country".
Moreover, the Foreign Minister of the FYROM, Slobodan Casule, in an interview to Utrinski Vesnik of Skopje on December 29, 2001, said that he mentioned to the Foreign Minister of Bulgaria, Solomon Pasi, that they "belong to the same Slav people.”
I hope I've helped you since it is truth that a lot of people confuse real Macedonia in Greece with the Slavic state that uses the same name!
