I agree that a lot of gays act WAY out at those parades. Being gay myself, I agree SOMEWHAT that it doen't really further the cause in middle America. However, the whole point is that we shouldn't have to remain hidden like a dirty little secret. The reality is that most people who are predisposed towards thinking that way would feel the same way if it were a group of people wearing business suits and holding hands like "other people in society." Sound familiar?

I'll tell you something: not all gays do crap like that. There are a lot of us that would rather "be out of town" during gay pride week.
It is the same everywhere, all of your activists are working booths and riding floats and every drunk horny queer in a 200-mile radius is on the street drinking free beer from the clubs.
Obviously, the hardcore activists and drunk sex freaks only make the gay stereotype worse. In reality, most of us that are openly gay simply choose to go to work, live our lives, and tell a person that we are gay if they ask.
Some people, though, are just totally off the wall and act like idiots.... these people are the ones that you are talking about.. These people are the reason that many of us do not participate in our gay communities more than we do.
Where I live, most people know there is no need to differentiate people based on sexual preference and it just isn't an issue. On the other hand, it is hard to ignore those that rub their sexual preferences in your face every time they get the chance.

I wouldn't march in the parade, I have something to do that day. But who is going to want to be in a parade to begin with, the most flamboyant and wild people who want attention; many gays don't like the tone that the gay pride parades take at times; it can be a little demeaning at times.

I'm gay myself and I think gay pride parades are dirty! First of all, who cares that your gay! what's the deal? The gays who act like dogs in heat are the gays that give most gay people a bad name! If you want to get down and dirty do it in your own house with your partner, not with 10 different guys in the street! But it's just my oppinion. Some gay festivals aren't as bad as others. But still, who needs to join a gay pride fesitval just to let every one know you're gay? Heterosexuals don't have a pride parade why should they? It's disgusting I think. Most gay people go to pride parades to get some, or to "find" someone. Men are pigs we all know that. In life we need to spreed our seed weither gay or not. Gays think , at a pride festival, it's the best time to search, mingle, and "interact" with as many people as he desires because there's sooooo many gay people around him, and they don't know what to do with themselves.

I was at Pride two weekends ago and certainly didn't notice anyone having sex with each other. In fact, my boyfriend and I were the most scandalous people we saw, wearing nothing but our thongs.
I can't claim to speak for all gay people, but I can tell you why I get "so nasty" at Pride. Society, as I'm sure you're aware, is generally anti-gay. We're already societal outcasts, and so to preserve our mental health we generally just stop caring about what society thinks of us. For me, this involves not only not caring about what society thinks of my sexuality, but also what society thinks of my lack of religion, what society things of how much clothing I wear (or don't wear), and similar things.
There are plenty of gays who are just as bothered by the "nasty" Pride behavior as you are. I (I'm 18) was working with several older people (from their thirties to their fifties) on our town's float in Atlanta's Pride parade. So many of the people I was working with kept on saying that they didn't want any "go-go boys in g-strings" on the Athens float, because that didn't fit with their image. I personally find that extraordinarily hypocritical, to want society to accept your sexuality but not being willing to accept someone else's choice of clothing.
I personally love the craziness of Pride events. I love all the bare skin. I love the bright colors. I love the rampant public display of affection. To me, Pride events are just a fancy way of asking society "Why does it matter what I do, no matter how unlike what you do?"

Some people are just nasty. I has nothing to do with them being gay. Besides, "blending in" and being "accepted" are not always desirable objectives.

Outstanding question.
I usually ask people who introduce themselves by pointing out their differences why they do that.
Usually a blank stare is the answer. It doesn't seem to do much good to say you want to be treated equally when you wear your differences like they are your best suit.
Just keep asking, though, maybe one day people who label themselves as "different" will stop blaming others for treating them differently.

The same reason straight women get nasty at Mardi Gras.......because they can, and it's their right to! And it's not like they do that every day of the year. Grow up and get over it!

What you see on gay day is just the tip of the iceberg. They are disgusting perverts and the death civilization. They are far more repulsive than you can imagine.
