The most immediate answer would be suffering is a part of existence. However, if your question really is "Why is there so much human suffering in the world?", then there is a more practical answer. The preeminent cause of human suffering in the world is the domination of resources into the hands of a few powerful countries and multinational corporations at the expense of the vast majority of humanity. Another primary cause of human suffering is the prescence of religious fundamentalism around the world: where religious belief takes precedence over scientific understanding and over social justice; there oppression, poverty, and war prevail. A third cause of human suffering would be the sheer mismanagement of resources such that, even as overpopulation increases demand, the supply of basic environmental resources, such as clean air, food, fuel, and clean water is declining. Add to this the consequences of reckless choices in energy production and consumption i.e. global warming, then it is evident that the present level of human suffering will be far surpassed in the coming decades and centuries.

Most of it has to do with "free will", and a persons choice to do or not do the right thing. Those who choose not to do the right thing create a domino effect which creates additional suffering.
Also, If you're asking about God, God's view is not that we are suffering, it's all a part of his great 'plan'. God lets there be suffering so we can all learn from that event. For example, if there was never a hurricane Katrina, we would never learn to build the city so that it could withstand a, possibly worse, or bigger natural disatser.

I'd have to agree with Bruce when he said, "The amount of suffering is equal to the amount of stupidity." It's pretty much our fault. We, as humans, are too ignorant, stupid, and self-seeking to care about other people.

Because the amount of suffering is proportional to the amount of stupidity.

Personally I've found that feeling good is more important to people then fear, and that we simply aren't willing to consider alternatives even when we're in pain. Simply put, "if you keep doing what you're doing, then you'll keep getting what you're getting.

Very nice question, some answers are thoughtful and some make me chuckle. I don't know the answer, but wish it wasn't so. Is there any hope?
