Personally, I was happy with what my mom and dad did for my first birthday. Invite the whole family. Mom's side, and Dad's side. Get them all together in the same house, not a restaurant, a house. Eat lots of cake and ice cream, and don't get mad if the birthday girl/boy makes a mess. They're one year old. If they want to smash their face in the cake, tell them, "Have at it sweetie!" This will make your child's birthday memorable and fun. Also, take lots of pictures, and videotape the whole thing. Just set up the camera on the table so you can see the whole room. I hope that this birthday is a great one.

First of all he's not going to know too much about what's happening being that he's only one year old,now that's out of the way TAKE LOTS OF PICTURES AND VIDEO,get a Elmo cake most bakeries should be able to make one or get a Elmo cake pan from a party store and make it yourself,if you can rent a Elmo costume for a family member or friend to wear and have them come in after the party starts as a big surprise, buy Elmo cups, plates and napkins a party store should have them along with happy first birthday Elmo balloons and Elmo invitations, you could also request that anybody coming wrap the gifts in Elmo wrapping paper. Above all just have fun and if the party gets too much for your son and he gets sick (throws up) don't get upset it's all part of the experience.

Maybe show some Elmo videos, make sure you video tape the party it would be a good moemory to keep. Hand out party bags for the kids. Just have a playroom for them or something, where they can play or something.

Elmo decorations, red balloons, etc
AS an activity, buy a scrap book and begin decorating it before the party. Have the guest write their thoughts and hopes for your child....what cute things he does, their favorite memory so far, etc. Great memory for when he gets older.
Give everyone throw away cameras to take pictures of all the things that go on. Relatives will love being able to have the pictures and you can get the duplicates.

Both my granddaughters had Elmo for their first birthday party. I think the best thing is just giving the birthday boy his own cake and letting him go at it without freaking at the mess. And at one, sometimes they like the boxes and paper better than the gifts. Just let him do what he wants without a bunch of pre-planned things that get your expectations up and one, going on two, it's kinda hard to plan. JUST HAVE FUN

You need to understand that a 1 year old doesn't need a birthday party. He will not really understand what is going on. If you have a birthday party, it will be for your own satisfaction, not his. If you have a party, make it low-key so the noise and fuss doesn't upset him. He doesn't need much in the way of presents, just a stuffed animal or two or something similar. You even admit that it will be mostly adults attending.

Well, he's 1, he's not going to remember if you don't throw him an awesome party. Have a game or something for all the other kids, or something to keep them occupied. When everyone gets there, eat cake and open presents right away. Then, he can play with all his new toys while parents chat.

We did my granddaughters 1st birthday at a small park. Brought in lots of food and cake and had easy access to the playground for the bigger kids to play. It wasn't glamorous, but the adults seemed to enjoy sitting outside and the kids had a blast as well.

your kid won't remember it since he is only 1 so make sure you tape the party with a cancorder.
the tape would be a great gift for him for later so he could look back and see how loved he is by his parents and their friends.
