You need a multiple approach to advertising, like spokes in a wheel, the more spokes the better.
Choose the basics like business cards (make them eye-catching with a great slogan), along with flyers and brochures.
Then add in direct marketing
Write letters to prospects - personal letters will draw prospects in like flies to honey.
Try running contests.
Use the interent, have a website, email to prospects and clients.
Run affordable ads, but track your results - don't waste money.
Word of mouth.
Pay attention to your existing clients, get them back, cross sell, up sell, recurring sales.
Networking.
Friends and family.

I think the best way to advertise anything is to create a recognition basis...logos,brands etc you shouldn't have to squint to see that a shirt is a fubu or that a joint like pizza hut is pizza hut...if your hungry and you see the logo, you'll go for it.Having a catchy phone number can also work miracles,e.g. think about the Hastings direct phone number,I bet you 50% of all those who see their add in the papers know their number, just to prove the point ill list it,
0800 0010 66 its very catchy.
Of coarse its hard giving you answers when I know little about the product you are advertising so bare with me.

i heard that 'word of mouth' is the new holy grail and somethin that big corporations are envious of. build up you business and impress friends and people you know with it and the news will spread.
other than that if u are a small loacl business i suggest radio advertising!

Networking. Always, absolutely and above all, networking. I'm in energy; I go to energy gigs (you know, seminar this, exhibition that) and just grab people as they walk past. That works in my business. Your field? could be different... but I suspect networking will be a part of it unless you're selling gobstoppers or something.

Depending on your particular market, your potential customers must find that your product is something they want/need. You simply need to concentrate on pursuation, and be certain that your product has actual value.
