Have you not been in anime long? To not run into ANY gay characters is kinda . . . odd.

There are a few series that aren't yaoi or shounen ai oriented that have gay characters that I've seen. Fushigi Yuugi has Nuriko (he is in love with the Emperor), the vice president of the club in Magic User's Club is gay (though I forget his name right now), Cain in NightWalker has much interest in Shido, the main character, Dio from Last Exile and Claire from Heat Guy J are very flaming if not confirmed anything, the Weapons Dealer in Outlaw Star, Count D in Pet Shop of Horrors (again, not confirmed but he acts like it), I don't think anyone in Revolutionary Girl Utena is beyond "experimenting", Sailor Moon not only had the two Sailor Scouts that were together, at least four of the Negaverse Generals were paired up and Fisheye had a crush on Darien, Sorcerer (Bakaretsu) Hunters have Marron, carrots older brother, X has Subaru and Seichirou, and in .hack//Legend of the Twilight Balmung starts acting rather odd, compared to Sign. Also some say that characters in regular series that wear pink are gay, (examples are Quatre in Gundam Wing, and Kurama in Yu Yu Hakusho) though that is completely hearsay.

Earthian and Gravitation are two series that the main characters are gay. Yami no Matsuei and Weiss Kreuz are two where nothing is ever confirmed but we get tons of fan service to that effect (not counting Muraki, Muraki what a nutjob, period).

Neptune and Uranus in the original Sailor Moon, were actually lovers. They were changed into cousins during the English translation.

Take a look at Revolutionary Girl Utena. No one there is sure whether they are gay or straight.

There are pleanty of gay characters out there, it's just that US Translators change it to conform to the standards of every day mom's.

Also, a lot of the guys on Kyo Kara Moah are gay.

BTW Gravitation is not Yaoi, it's Shounen Ai. Unles it actually shows them getting down to the nitty gritty, it's not Yaoi.

Well, you would have to read yaoi (MalexMale) manga, then. Manga like Angel Sanctuary, FAKE, Zetsuai, X, and Ai no Kusabi are yaoi and are availiable. I'm not sure if the manga have been translated into English, though. You can always watch the anime if need be.

Check out Gravitation. It's a yaoi anime. There's plenty yaoi out there (which, if you don't know, is gay guys in anime). There's only one gay couple that I know of so far, but a few gay other gay guys and a bi or two, I believe. It's also a good anime/manga (it's both) You should check it out. But I know what you mean, there needs to be more gays.

There are so many gay anime and manga character and some of the best exampals I've seen already menchen like Gravitasion. One that I didn't see menchened though as a good exampal of bi sexuality is Revilusionary Girl Utena.

Well, it also could be that you are watching versions that have been re-censored for American viewing on tv. I know that in the original Sailor moon, there are two lesbians in the sailor senshi. I think it was Uranus and Pluto... but in the american edit, they became cousins. I know it's screwed up that those things are edited, but that happens. So be sure that you are getting the original japanese versions before complaining that there are few homosexuals in average anime.

That is the only anime I can think of off the top of my head that I know for sure has been altered in the edit, but I'm sure there are more.

Have you heard of Gravitation? FLCL? Cardcaptor Sakura? All of those have major characters in homosexual couples. Although the only one I can name the couples in are CCS, which have Touya/Yukito and Tomoyo has a crush on Sakura.

In Tsubasa Chronicle, some people speculate that Fai is bisexual or Homosexual.

In fact, there's an implied or sometimes direct homosexual couple or character in almost all of CLAMP's works I can think of easily (Eagle/Lantis, Ashura/Yasha, The three mentioned above, Subaru/Seishiro, Syaoran's crush on Yukito early on...)

Gay? I believe you are referring to Kaorin.. her lesbianism behaviour or purely her obsession idolising Sakaki.

"Young same-sex affection is considered natural in real-life Japan to a much later age than in the West. The relationships may extend to infatuation complete with gift-giving, kissing (among girls) and other touches many Westerners would consider overtly romantic/sexual." - Wikipedia

I wouldn't really say that Kaorin is gay. There are definitely indication of BL (boy love, shounen ai) / GL (Girl love, shoujo ai) in azumanga but it is generally referring to affection between the same sex.

It isn't that hard to spot signs of BL/GL in the normal stream anime if it isn't censored off. Unless you are referring to Yuri/Yaoi anime with explicit sex content or BL/GL anime that is deliberately created to show us the affection, there will be tons of it in it like Gravitation, Kyou Kara Maou, Gakuen Heaven, Loveless, Kasimasi ~Girl Meets Girl~

Indication of BL/GL is often found in main stream anime such as:
Sailormoon - Haruka (Sailor Uranus) and Michiru (Sailor Neptune)
Cardcaptor Sakura - Sakura and Tomoyo
Cardcaptor Sakura - Yukito and Toya
Mai Otome - Natsuki and Shizuru
Mahou Sensei Negima - Setsuna and Konoka
Bleach - Orihime and Tatsuki

You should really watch anime in the Japanese. With the English verisons they change things so that it's more kid friendly and mess up the story lines. There are a lot of gays in anime, watch it in Japanese.

There aren't many gay characters in non-yaoi anime simply becasue it's non-yaoi anime. If you put a lot of gay characters in it, it gets re-classified as yaoi.
